ACAPULCO 2012

It was our usual late January trip to Acapulco for a week at the Grand Mayan resort

This year it is a little different.  Mexico is getting bad press, especially Acapulco, about the drug wars.  So the airlines have reacted by cutting flights.  No more non-stop from Newark; only a 50 passenger commuter jet from Houston as the only flight from the US.

The connection at Houston was daunting.  Very long walk and train ride.  The plane is full of regulars, saying what they will and will not do to be safe.  Flight is cramped but OK.

Airport is nearly deserted.  Our taxi driver said there are no security issues, except if you buy or sell drugs. Every local said the same thing.

It took a long time to get our room....maybe less maids.

Despite all the above the hotel is reasonably full of Mexicans and the regulars from the US.  So the food is more Mexican including regional specialties.  And live Mexican music.

We finally did get around to playing tennis.  The shaded clay courts are the greatest.

The weather is really great.  Typically high is 90 low is 70.

We sit with the regulars on the beach under a palalpa.  A dog has adopted us for a couple of days until the owners retrieve her.

The new toy on the beach is a motorized kite carrying people aloft

We are delighted to get free internet at one end of the beach, I think from the Condos.  We use our new tablet computer.

Alice and I each of us read several books. One of mine was a new JFK book a Christmas gift from Kathy.  And another gift, the Panasonic noise cancelling headphones were outstanding on the beach and on the planes.

It was over all too soon, but we will be there next year.

Fortunately the trip home was uneventful.
